From the bitter cold waters of the Antarctic Peninsula, to warm island coasts in the Indian Ocean, to the Italian beaches along the Mediterranean, here are the places with the clearest ocean water in the world!
While there are many lakes and ponds with crystal surfaces and depths, we want to explore which of the world’s oceans are the most transparent. The appeal of clear water is that swimmers don’t need to worry about what creatures could possibly be lurking beneath the surface...except for in the Weddell Sea!
1. The Weddell Sea, Antarctica
Assuming the water isn’t one great big block of ice, scientists claim that the Weddell Sea (the Southernmost part of the Atlantic Ocean) has the clearest ocean water in the world. Despite the chill, this sea is home to penguins and seals, which can be seen at virtually any depth.
The crystal-clear water stretches across 1,200 miles and 2,000 meters deep. Although the Arctic may not be the most popular vacation destination, this sea has an epic history of brave visitors dating back to the 1820’s.
2. The Maldives, South Asia
If reading about the frigid, deep waters of the Arctic wasn’t for you, you’ll probably be glad to hear that The Maldives also have some of the clearest ocean water in the world.
This South Asian archipelago maintains an 82-86-degree water temperature year-round, making it the perfect spot to swim, dive, surf, sail, parasail, snorkel, and sunbathe. The water is so clear and such an integral part of life in the Maldives, many hotels and resorts build bungalows directly over it!
3. Sardinia, Italy
This Italian island is located 282 miles off the coast of Rome, and boasts over one thousand miles of coastline along the Mediterranean. This vacation destination is known for its mountainous terrain and, of course, gorgeous beaches.
With all that coastline and aquamarine water, Sardinia is home to some of the world’s best beaches. If you’re planning a visit and want to make sure you hit the best of the best, check out this list of the best beaches in Sardinia!
4. Palawan, Philippines
This archipelago is situated in the top ranked region of the Philippines, MIMAROPA. As TripAdvisor describes it, “Palawan is a slice of heaven, a sliver of an island that teems with exotic wildlife, quaint fishing villages, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.”
From the Puerto Princes an underground river to the Big Lagoon boat tour, the locals are glad to show off their islands’ natural beauty to foreign visitors. If you visit, make sure to spend at least one day island hopping through El Nido!
